Following the artistic metaphor, the soul is that part of us that finds pleasure in art, or to throw it back to high school English, the soul is the romantic aspect of all of us, the transcendentalist that that seeks the indescribable sublime. In a beautiful sense, we are intricate compositions, tapestries of those who came before us.įor those who believe in the concept of the soul, if we are not our thoughts or bodies, we are our souls. As George Bernard Shaw once said, “life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.” We can celebrate our roots and branch out in our own direction. But once we acknowledge this, who we want to be and how we get there becomes a choice of our own making driven by what it is we are seeking. It can be frightening, or even disheartening to think that maybe the person we are wasn’t entirely our choice, or that factors we can’t even begin to fathom shaped us without our knowledge. Countless factors, the praise we received, or didn’t, the media we consumed or didn’t, the interactions we witnessed or didn’t, the behaviors we observed or didn’t. We are shaped by those around us, their values start to define how we create our own. The saying, “it takes a village to raise a child,” comes to mind. ![]() Existentially, we are the sum product of a lifetime of influences, many of which were outside of our control. You are not the contents of your wallet.” The question yet remains then, what are we? If you have watched Fight Club, which I shouldn’t be talking about, you have heard it said that “you are not your job, you’re not how much money you have in the bank. You may have heard it said, we are not our (negative) thoughts, or mind either. You may have heard it said that we are not our bodies. ![]()
